In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number of Indian students pursuing higher education abroad. According to data from the Ministry of External Affairs, the number of Indian students studying overseas rose from 675,541 in 2019 to 1,335,878 in 2024.
However, in 2024, there was a notable decline of nearly 15% in the number of Indian students going abroad for education, with the total dropping to 759,064 from 892,989 in 2023.
This surge in demand for visas, coupled with unprecedented delays, can be attributed to several factors:
Increase in the Number of Students Going to Study Abroad: The substantial growth in the number of students has led to a higher volume of visa applications, causing processing delays.
Short-Staffed Embassies and High Volume of Applications: Many embassies are facing staffing shortages, which, combined with the increased number of applications, has resulted in longer processing times.
Stricter Rules Due to the Formalities Brought on by the Pandemic: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to additional health and safety protocols, contributing to delays in visa processing.
Global Events Impacting Visa Policies: International events, such as geopolitical tensions and policy changes, have influenced visa regulations and processing times.
Steps Taken by the Government
On June 24, 2022, officials from the Ministry of External Affairs held discussions with foreign countries, including Australia, Canada, the Czech Republic, Germany, New Zealand, Poland, the UK, and the USA, to streamline and expedite visa appointments for Indian students. These efforts aimed to address the delays and ensure that students could commence their studies as planned.
Precautions to Take Amidst the Uncertainty
Consider Priority and Super Priority Visas: Although it might incur additional costs, opting for priority or super priority visa services can expedite the process. Some institutions may reimburse these fees if the delay was on their part.
Complete Preliminary Visa Requirements Early: Ensure that all necessary health check-ups, language proficiency tests, and proof of funds are prepared well in advance to prevent further delays.
Maintain a Checklist of Required Documents: Keeping a thorough checklist can help avoid missing documents that could delay your visa decision.
Book Tickets After Receiving Your Visa: To minimize financial loss, book your travel only after obtaining your visa, or opt for refundable ticket options.
Explore Alternative Options:
Defer Admission: Consider deferring your admission to a later intake or the next academic year if delays persist.
Access Coursework Online: Check if your university offers online coursework until your visa is processed.
Consider Domestic Education: Reevaluate domestic education options as a contingency plan.
Staying informed about visa policies and maintaining flexibility in your plans can help navigate the uncertainties associated with visa delays.
